Evaluation- Question 5

Question:
How did you attract/address your audience?

I think from the start of the film opening, the audience sees  that the main actor is a young adult, which is something they can instantly relate to, being young adults them selves.

The Mis en scene gives another thing for our target audience to relate to. The actor wears casual clothes to make him look like a regular young adult which is important to our film opening. Also, the props used heighten the interest of the viewer.

The production company is a college production company, since a large number of my audience attends college them selves, it allows them to know what we had to work with, since its probably similar in their own college. It also shows them that we are just regular students like them, making the film opening more exciting for the viewer.

The rough cut feedback helped us greatly. It showed us what we had to do not only to improve the film opening but to improve it with our target audience in mind. We fixed many of the flawed technical elements which led to a better film opening all in all.

We watched the final film opening on a cinema screen in a cinema called the screen on the green. It was very useful in providing what turned out to be very positive feedback for our final film opening.

Aspects of Last Note that appeal to our audience...

Our target audience is from the age of 16, the characters in this film are of quite young age, so our audience can relate to the characters in our film and have a better understanding of some of the things they are going through,

The story line for Last Note is based around a romance that is no longer due to death. The man who is mourning his wife is looking for revenge for the people that were involved in the killing of his partner. Aspects of romance from the past relationship along with aspects of action from the revenge the main character is seeking, helps Last Note appeal to both genders, because males are known for liking action based movies, females on the other hand, romantic movies. A mix of the two along with the fact that it is a thriller will hopefully draw a widespread audience.

Our production company is Candi Studios, which is a college based production company that releases many films that are targeted for a young audience such as ours.

How our rough cut helped improve of opening...

When we finished our rough cut we still were planning to include one more scene, but because of the amount of positive feedback we got from the scene we had already done and due to the fact the scene was incomplete and already nearly had reached the intended 2 minute limit, we as a group decided to scrap the whole second scene we had filmed because we felt it would make our film opening drag on and may ruin our groups intentions of how we wanted it to appeal to our audience.

Also we made the decision to change the title sequence, previously the title sequence ran through the video. We decided that it would create more tension if each title split each clip, so we put the titles in between each clip on a blank background, which we were told looked better and created the desired effect of more tension.

How we have reached our audience so far...

We have reached our audience so far via Cinema Screening which took place on the 20th March, at The Screen On The Green in Angel. Our film debuted in front of a crowd of a few hundred, we received a lot of favorable feedback from the audience.

Our film opening will be uploaded on Vimeo soon and we are looking to also releasing it on Facebook and Youtube in the future.

Evaluation Question 7 :

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Through the process of filming the preliminary and the final product i think my camera skills have improved greatly, in the preliminary i only knew basic shot types but by using the camera more often i learned more camera angles and my footage has become more steady.

My editing skills have also improved as when we were filming the preliminary i did not know how to use final cut pro but after  practising, we created our final clip. I learnt how to add titles and effects to the clips. Also, i have learnt to use soundtrack pro, to add music to the clips and have become more familiar with the programme.

Further more my planning skills have also improved as during the preliminary we did not use the story board as much as we did for our final clip, this improved our final product and saved us a lot of time as we had all ready mapped out what we would be doing at what dates.

Evaluation- Question 7

Question:

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Planning & Storyboard

In terms, of planning, my skills have greatly improved from my preliminary to my final film opening. The planning for the preliminary task was very rushed as compared to the final film opening. For example, we did not follow most of the shots we planned to use from the storyboard in the preliminary task as we found that they did not work well. Better planning would have solved this problem. The final film opening planning went much more smoothly. We followed all of the shots we planned on the storyboard.

Camera

Using the camera in the preliminary proved difficult, it took time to adjust the camera in the right position to capture usable shots. At times we couldn't use a tripod to steady the camera because of the small size of the room that we were working in. The camera was used much more effectively in the final film opening. We were able to use a tripod properly and steady the camera. We were also able to put the camera in and out of focus when we wanted to add effect to the scene. A skill we did not process when making the preliminary. We also learned how to watch playback of the recently film scenes to see what we could possibly do better.

Mis en Scene

The controlling of Mis en scene was non-existant in the making of the preliminary. We never arranged the props correctly simply due to inexperience and allot of things looked out of place in the scene. We also forgot about costume and just woe whatever we were wearing at the time. On the other hand, in the final film opening we put allot of thought into the Mis en scene. We planned the costume before hand and it was to the benefit of our scene. The props were also properly arranged this time. We had lit candles, a newspaper article, a noose, writing pad and pen. They all looked great and added to the effectiveness of the scene by making it seem more realistic and believable.

Lighting

Lighting proved difficult in both the preliminary and the final film opening. In the preliminary there was no light available apart from the light in the actual room we used to film in. Therefore we had no control over the lighting of the scene which negatively effected it. The lighting in the final film was much better but still was hard to use. We had a dimmer light available to us which we used to the best of our abilities, it allowed us to get rid of some shadows in the background  by altering the height, range and brightness of the light. Some things still weren't right though and for some scenes we put a bag over the light to shoot the scene. We know it was not ideal but necessary.

Sound

There was no soundtrack in the preliminary scene because we found it difficult too effectively use soundtrack pro. We did add foley sound though because they were easy enough to do with just the camera's microphone. The final film had a fully fledged soundtrack created on Soundtrack pro, by then I had the skills necessary to create a very good soundtrack. We wanted to add foley sounds also but there was no time for that.

Soundtrack Pro

Editing

Editing on both the preliminary and the final film was done on final cut pro. Our skills on Finalcut pro did'n't really improve from the preliminary to the final film because we were already quite good at it, I feel if we had more time to practise on Final cut pro, we would have been more skilled and able to use Finalcut pro to a much higher level.

Evaluation - Question 3

Candi studios is best to distribute our media production because with a low budget we are able to reach a wide audience via social networking sites such as facebook, twitter and blogs.
A online release on vimeo which is beneficial as people worldwide are able to view our film

Evaluation Question 4 :

Who would be the audience for your media product?

The main audience for our thriller is the demographic between the ages of 18 and 30. This is because the people of this age group would be able to understand the affect of loosing someone you are in a relationship with, further more it contains some graphic content of death which younger viewers may find distressing. Although the film is suitable is for both genders, it is more directed towards the male members of the audience as female viewers may not be interested in the thriller genre and may be more into romantic genre movies

In thriller movies the target audience usually starts from the age of 18 as they may contain violence or other scenes which may not be suitable for children to view.

Evaluation Question 3 :

What kind of media Institution might distribute your media product and why?

The production and distribution company we have used in our thriller sequence is Candi Studios. This is a small production/distribution company as they are a independent and low budget company who can provide our film local publicity, further more the company is not mainstream like paramount or warner brothers so it is cheap to use.

Evaluation Question 2 :

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

In media the main aspects that are represented are :

- Age
- Gender
- Ethnicity
- Sexuality
- Social Groups

Our media product depicts Age through the use of mise en scene as the character wears casual clothes through out the opening sequence, this represents age as people from the older demographic would not usually wear baseball jackets and trainers.

In our opening Gender is represented opposite to the norm as as usually it is the women that s remorsing after the loss off her partner where as in our clip the opposite occurs.

Evaluation Question 1 :

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

The conventions of a film opening are the main features of the film opening sequence, this include features like the title, production/distribution companies, producer and cast members.

The conventions of a title sequence include the director, members of the cast, mise en scene and it in some openings a little preview of what the film will be about.

Our opening sequence consists of the titles appearing on a blank screen, similar to seven.

Evaluation - Question 3

Distribution
In Last Note we chose to put Candi Studios at the start of the title sequence. Candi Studios is a small independent film maker. Small localised film making is on the rise due to the use of social networking. This means Candi Studios has more  power and is able to reach more people and gain publicity on sites such as Facebook. People have the power to share and inform others about a movement and can snowball into something bigger and end up becoming viral.

Candi Studios is able to offer

  • A cinematic release
  • 250 DVD release
  • Online release on Vimeo
I think that a localised release is best suited for our film because, we are on a limited budget, and use of Facebook and Youtube means that the film can be published for free, whilst still being able to gain publicity.

Question:
How Does your media product represent particular social groups?

In our film opening, we steered away from obvious representations of social groups. This wasn't a conscious decision on our behalf but its the direction we went in. The small representations in our film opening is of young people and its not a common representation. A film like 'Kidulthood' has very clear and rather stereo-typical representations of young people, like in the clip below.

Evaluation - Question 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media?

In all film opening regardless of the genre or audience, you wil always see a Distribution/Production Companies

The typical conventions which we see included in film openings vary from 'title sequence', which is an umbrella term for the names of cast, name of director and the film title. The significance for the names of cast and director, creates recognition for the actors/actresses, directors and writers.

Evaluation- Question1

Question: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

The typical convention seen in film openings is a 'title sequence'. It includes information like Production/distribution logos, cast member names and the name of the director.

Conventions of film openings:

The four different types of conventions to think about in a film opening are:

- Traditional

- Stylized

- Discrete

- Black Screen

For example, the film '300' uses a stylised film opening convention.  This graphics style is used through out the film opening. It represents the film perfectly and implies that a battle will take place, foreshadowing future events.

The convention we used was traditional. It was more on the 'plain' side, not revealing anything about the actual film

- Production/distribution company

Production and distribution logos are a strong feature in any film opening. Depending on the style of the film, the logo might have some effects added which relates to the film in some way.

Here we see some effects added to the Paramount logo.

Here is the original Paramount logo. Its very different to the one above.

- Name of Cast and Director

'300' uses red font to write the names of the director and cast members. I believe that it is supposed to look like blood which could suggest a very violent film.

The names of the director and cast members in our film opening does not give anything away. Its different to most films as the font type would probably have greater significance to the film, whereas our has none.

- Title of Film

- Introduction to main character

Here are some of the other conventions.

- Graphics Appropriate Font Type
- Establish Location
- Suitable music/sound

The conventions used in our film opening

The conventions used in the film '300' influenced the conventions of our own film opening. we put the name of the director first in the title sequence which is not the conventional way but its how its done in '300'. Though we did add our own style, we have an introduction to the main character almost instantly whereas '300' doesn't, making it different.
